Sample Society Subscription Box Review- August 2014
What: Sample Society
Sample Society is a monthly beauty box subscription from Allure Magazine and BeautyBar.com. I’ve been getting this box for about four months now and have been very impressed. They include high-end products and the samples I’ve received have been a good size. They tend to be makeup/hair oriented from what I can tell. Also- they ship quickly! Unlike some other subscription boxes, I don’t believe there are variations to this one- I think everyone gets the same products each month. (if anyone disagrees- let me know)
Most subscription boxes come with a card detailing the products included in the box, but Sample Society takes it a step farther and includes a booklet full of information and tips on the products from Allure editors. I think it’s the best “info card” in any of the boxes I receive…
First look at the August box!
Oribe Surfcomber Tousled Texture Mousse: 2.5 oz/value $21.50
Full Size: $37
This is larger than travel size, but not a full size. Definitely a generous sized sample. As I love all things Oribe, I was excited to see this in the box. After using for a couple of days the way it was recommended- used on dry hair- I can report back that I like it. A little goes a long way, but it definitely gave my hair a great beachy wave and texture to it. If you are looking for something to give you some volume- this is for you. It also smells amazing…
Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick (color- Melted Peony): 5 ml/value $8.40
Full Size: $21
This is interesting- it’s a cross between a lip gloss and a lipstick and I have to tell you- I’m really digging it. The color, the texture, the way it goes on and the way it feels after a minute of being on your lips. This is great stuff! It goes on matte and is a great feminine color. I will be looking for more colors of this for sure…
Ciate Mini Paint Pots Nail Polish (color- Cha Cha Cha): $6
Full Size: $15
This is a fun, bright orange/neon color that will be great on toes. It’s the perfect summer color to show off a tan
(Black Ice): 3g/value $8.25
Full size: $33
I get A LOT of mini mascaras in subscription boxes. I think I probably have enough to last me for 2 years, but that’s ok. Although I’m pretty much OBSESSED with Christian Dior Diorshow Black Out mascara (ladies- if you haven’t tried it- you need to go buy it immediately, it’s the most amazing stuff), I’ll still try out others…and these little versions are great for travel. This one I was especially drawn to because it’s in a tube. Why more mascaras aren’t, I don’t know. What better way is there to get all the product out? Anyway…this is petroleum free and came with a nice full brush/wand. I liked it- I didn’t go crazy over it, but it did give my lashes some nice length.
Kate Somerville Dilo Oil Restorative Oil: 3ml/value $6.50
Full Size: $65
This is a dry face oil that is touted as fast-absorbing. (I can attest to that- goes on great and sinks right in) It came in a small vial, but I guess that’s not surprising considering the price of the oil at full size! I’m still getting into face oils; with oily skin, there’s something odd about adding more oil to your face. But people swear by them, and this particular one gets great reviews.
Overall Opinion: the value of the box was $50 and I only paid $15 for it. I think it’s a great box! I loved the summer curation and will definitely use everything in here. The Oribe mousse and lipstick were my favorites and made this box worth it to me. Also- each month you get a coupon for $10 off of $50 at BeautyBar.com.
Did you get this month’s Sample Society box? What did you think?
