Missing Downton Abbey? Here’s the Next Best Thing…

book royal“A weekend? Whatever is a weekend?” – Lady Grantham

Since we have to wait until January (gasp!) for the new season of Downton Abbey to air, I was excited when I stumbled upon the Rhys Bowen book series, Royal Spyness Mystery. I was scrolling through Audible’s website when thanks to fat fingers, I inadvertently clicked on the book, Her Royal Spyness. While historical fiction isn’t usually my first choice, I liked what I saw in the first couple of sentences. The books center around Lady Victoria Georgiana Charlotte Eugenie, (aka Georgie) who is 34th in line for the throne and flat broke. She’s been asked to spy for HRH the Queen, but before she can start her assignment, she finds a dead Frenchman in her bathtub. Whatever to do?

Murder mystery, check. Anything English, check. Cute book cover, check. (only kind of kidding there) The reviews were good so I gave it a whirl and found it utterly charming. It’s Depression-era England, but you wouldn’t know it from the way the aristocrats carry on with their lavish parties and lunches at Harrod’s. Lady Georgie is an appealing heroine- she’s clumsy, smart, funny, and overall a strong female character. Ms. Bowen has created some great characters, included plenty of wit, and of course your typical dry British humor. If you’re like me and enjoy audiobooks, the reader of these, Katherine Kellgren, is phenomenal. (and believe me- that can make or break a book)

This book series (9 total) are an easy read and will definitely give you your uber rich Brit fix while you wait on Lady Mary. You’ll find it nearly impossible to not picture Downtown Abbey in your head while reading…
